Ingredients

  • 2 cups white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 hot dogs
  • 2 cups purple yam, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups kabocha squash, peeled and cubed
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 3 broccoli florets
  • Condensed milk, ketchup, seaweed, and cheese for decoration

Directions

  1. Pour two cups of rinsed white rice into the inner pot of your rice cooker, then fill with two cups of water.
  2. Place broccoli, cubed kabocha squash, cubed purple yam, uncracked eggs, and hot dogs onto the steam tray. Insert the tray into the cooker and securely close the lid.
  3. Press the White Rice function on your rice cooker to start cooking and steaming. Allow the ingredients to cook and steam for about 20-30 minutes.
  4. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large mixing bowl and mix in sesame oil and salt to flavor.
  5. Form four rice spheres from the cooked rice, then decorate them with seaweed as desired. Place the decorated rice spheres into the bento box.
  6. After the steamed ingredients are properly cooked and softened, remove the steam tray from the cooker.
  7. In a mixing bowl, mash the purple yam and milk together until a smooth consistency is reached. Using a large spoon, scoop 1-2 spoonfuls of the yam mixture into the bento box.
  8. To create spider webs, pour condensed milk atop the yam mixture in the shape of three concentric circles. Use a toothpick to pull the edges of the circles toward the middle to form the web design.
  9. Peel one of the hard-boiled eggs and cut it in half lengthwise. Decorate the egg halves with ketchup as desired.
  10. Chop the other hard-boiled egg into small pieces and place it in a mixing bowl along with the kabocha squash and mayonnaise. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Form the mixture into spherical shapes using a large spoon, then place the spheres into the bento box.
  11. Decorate the kabocha squash spheres with seaweed as desired.
  12. Cut the steamed hot dog in half and place a small piece of cheese inside the bento box.
  13. Fill any empty spaces in the bento box with pieces of steamed broccoli.
  14. Your creatively decorated bento box is now ready to be enjoyed!
